Understanding the Way Traditional Tank Water Heaters Work

As their name suggests, traditional water heaters, also known as storage water heaters, work by storing a large quantity of heated water for use as needed. A heating element or gas burner is located inside the tank, and this element heats the water in the tank to a desired temperature. The tank is insulated to minimize heat loss, and when a hot water faucet is turned on, the heated water flows from the tank to the faucet.

A traditional tank water heater has the following key components:

  • Tank
  • Heating element
  • Thermostat
  • Pressure relief valve
  • Anode rod

Causes of Water Heater Disruption in Traditional Water Heaters

Issues with any of these components can disrupt your hot water supply. Some of the most common issues with traditional water heater functions include:

  • Sediment buildup. Over time, minerals and sediment can accumulate at the bottom of the tank, insulating the heating element and preventing efficient heat transfer. This can result in slower heating times or insufficient hot water.
  • Faulty heating elements. If the heating elements in an electric water heater are damaged or corroded, they may not function properly, leading to insufficient or no hot water.
  • Anode rod failure. The anode rod is a sacrificial metal designed to corrode before the tank does. When it fails, the tank's inner lining can corrode, leading to leaks and reduced efficiency.
  • Thermostat issues. A faulty thermostat can prevent the water heater from reaching or maintaining the desired temperature.
  • Pressure valve malfunction. A malfunctioning relief valve can prevent the water heater from releasing excess pressure, leading to safety concerns and potential damage.

How Do Tankless Water Heaters Work?

Tankless water heaters, also known as on-demand water heaters, represent a more efficient alternative to traditional tank-style water heaters. Instead of storing a large quantity of heated water, they heat water instantly as needed, providing a continuous supply of hot water.

A simplified, step-by-step outline of how these on-demand water heaters work is as follows:

  • Cold water inlet. Cold water enters the tankless water heater through an inlet pipe.
  • Ignition. When a hot water faucet is turned on, the tankless heater detects the flow of cold water. This triggers the ignition of a heating element or gas burner.
  • Heating. The heating element or gas burner quickly heats the incoming cold water to the desired temperature.
  • Hot water outlet. The heated water is then delivered directly to the faucet, providing a constant supply of hot water.

Tankless water waters are often the premier choice over traditional tank water heaters, as they are space-saving, efficient, and have a longer lifespan. However, tank water heaters do have their advantages. Read our blog, “Tankless Water Heaters vs. Traditional Water Heaters,” to learn more about the pros and cons of each.

Causes of Tankless Water Heater Disruption

Tankless water heaters can also malfunction because of thermostat and sediment buildup issues. However, these systems can also malfunction because of:

  • Flow switch issues. The flow switch, which activates the heater when water flows, can malfunction, preventing the unit from turning on.
  • Ignition problems. In gas-powered units, problems with the ignition system can prevent the heater from igniting.
  • Clogged filters. Clogged filters can restrict water flow, reducing the heater's efficiency.
  • Heat exchanger damage. Damage to the unit’s heat exchanger, as well as issues with the electrical supply or components, can prevent the heater from functioning.
