Helpful Information

When autumn is here and winter is soon to follow it wont be long until your doors and windows are closed up tight preventing any circulation of fresh air through out the home. While you are trying to conserve heat and energy you are also limiting the infiltration of outside air which contributes to the build up of contaminants in the air in your home. Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers to the quality of the air in an indoor environment.

The cause of poor Indoor air quality (IAQ) can be attributed to a number of different elements in your environment. They include but are not limited to Tobacco smoke, Pet Dander, Dust Mites, Microbiological contamination such as mold, Ventilation system deficiencies (including undersized or leaking ductwork), and even Outside air pollutants.

The reactions to poor IAQ can range from simple, as the air smelling odd, to more complex, where the air quality causes illness and an adverse reaction to your body. Typical symptoms include nasal congestion, dry or irritated throats, headaches, unusual fatigue, skin irritation, varying degrees of itching or burning eyes, and nausea. Determining the cause of poor IAQ can be both simple and multifaceted based on the number and variety of possible sources, not to mention varying individual sensitivities.

If you suspect an air quality problem exists, take a few steps to determine if there is a problem and, if so, how to correct it. The first step in identifying problems that may contribute to poor IAQ is to do a walk–through inspection. It need not be a costly, intensive or detailed walk through but rather a quick  overview of the conditions that may contribute to or affect the quality of air in the  home.

During the walk through of your home remember to do the following as you move room to room.

Feel for uncomfortable air temperatures, drafts, and high or low humidity, and feel the air flowing into and out of grills and air vents.

Smell for unique or objectionable orders — including mold, mildew, and chemical smells — as you move from room to room, note any potential sources of these odors.

Listen to the concerns of the people who live in your home regarding IAQ. Are they having any of the symptoms we listed above? Also when listening do you hear unusual equipment noises which may indicate potential problems, or do you hear air blowing out of supply vents?

Observe the general cleanliness of the areas you notice signs of poor IAQ. Look for pollutant sources such as mold, improperly stored chemicals, or excessively dirty air filters and ducts. Also pay close attention for signs of water damage. As well as blocked airflow at the vents and air intakes as well.

If you start your IAQ Investigation now, you can eliminate air quality problems before they become a headache for everyone.
